Sir Francis Bacon

St Michael's is as historic a spot as you will find in England. The view from the top of the church-tower reveals evidence from the past twenty centuries. Though an integral part of St Albans city, St Michael's village is enclosed on three sides by open fields: church, school, museum, village-street, the watermill, the bridge beside the ford - all so little changed that you have to search to find a discordant note. And a mile away across the fields lies the tiny sister church of St Mary, by the green at the centre of the Childwickbury Estate.

Both St Michael's and St Mary's are remarkable survivals, loved and cherished alike by visitors and by those who have chosen to live here. At the heart of the community stands the parish church of St Michael, offering on behalf of all local people services which all are welcome to attend. The church bells one of England's most evocative sounds, ring out their call to Christian worship, with the inspiration, renewing power and consolation that such worship can provide.

Regular services at St Michael's and St Mary's are of course open to all. Services of baptism, marriage and funeral are available to all parishioners - our Vicar is glad to make arrangements as required. However, much of the day-to-day running of the parish is carried out by committed lay people, who bring a great variety of abilities and experience to the task of furthering God's work in the world. The range of their activities is wide.
